How buyback works?

At the end of each term the NWTC Bookstore gives students an opportunity to sell their books back to the bookstore for cash.  This can be a confusing process, and this explanation is intended to describe how the bookstore arrives at buyback prices and quantities, and to help you get the most money back for your books.

WHEN IS BUYBACK HELD?

Buyback is conducted four days at the end of each Fall and Spring term, and two days at the end of the Summer term.  In addition, there are two more buyback days at the beginning of Fall and Spring terms.  Please watch the website, and signs posted throughout the college, for dates and times.  Times and dates are also listed in the Student Calendars.

What determines the amount that I will receive for my books?

SUPPLY AND DEMAND!

First and foremost, the book must be used for the next term.  Many classes are offered in fall or spring only, or every two years.  In these cases, it will be your decision to hold the book until the next  buyback, or try to sell it at the wholesale price.

  • If a textbook is being used for the upcoming term, and the NWTC Bookstore needs additional inventory, you may receive up to 50% of the new book price (even if you purchased it used).  This means that if a book’s new price is $40.00, the RETAIL buyback price is $20.00.  If the same book was purchased used, at $30.00, you would still receive $20.00 at buyback, giving you 66% of your purchase price back.

  • If a textbook is NOT being used for the upcoming term, there may or may not be a WHOLESALE or National market value offered.  This value can range up to 30% of the new price.

Secondly, your book must be in good condition:

  • BOTH COVERS INTACT
  • MINIMAL HIGHLIGHTING
  • MINIMAL INK: WRITING OR UNDERLINING (LESS THAN 3 PAGES)
  • ABSOLUTELY NO WRITING IN WORKBOOKS – OR PAGES MISSING
  • NO PAGES MISSING – COMPLETE WITH ALL SUPPLEMENTS THAT ARE REQUIRED BY THE INSTRUCTOR
  • NO WATER DAMAGE

HOW MANY BOOKS ARE BOUGHT BACK?

The bookstore is only able to purchase the number of books that the store can reasonably expect to sell for the upcoming term.  For example, a class in the fall may have 100 students, but the same class in the spring may have only 50.  In this case the store cannot buy back 100 books at the RETAIL price.  For this reason, it is extremely important to sell your books back early in the buyback to get the most money back.

ARE THERE ANY BOOKS THAT HAVE NO VALUE?

Yes.  If there is a new edition coming out for a book you are trying to sell, your book will unfortunately have no value (RETAIL OR WHOLESALE).  Publishers change editions every 3-4 years, sometimes more often. Also, if the store is unable to buy the book for next term, there is no guarantee that you will be offered a WHOLESALE price.  The wholesale company bases its prices on supply and demand around the country, and your book may not be needed at other colleges.

Hopefully this explanation of the buyback procedure has helped you to better understand what price to expect for your books.  If you have any questions, please feel free to E-mail us at: gretchen.bonnema@nwtc.edu or call us at (920) 498-5407
